Astral formed in the spring of 2000 with Dave Han (vocal/ guitar), Shawn Poh (drums), and Amy Rosenoff (bass) completing the lineup. Their self-produced EP, titled Only Sometimes, was released in 2002 and has charted on college radio at #30 on WMBR (Cambridge, MA) and #34 on WPRB (Princeton, NJ) in May 2003. Astral has also received radio play on various college stations in the US, as well as abroad in Russia, Norway, Italy, and as far south as Peru. The debut full-length CD, titled Orchids, was released in October 2003, which was engineered by Randy Burk (engineered Swinging Utters) and Jim Sweeney (formerly of Glasstown and American Trash). On Christmas of 2002, Astral released a song on a double CD collaboration/ compilation called Thorn Apple with former members of Battery. Later this year, Astral will be releasing a 7” single through the indie-pop label, Pop Renaissance Records featuring “In the Sky” b/w a cover of Spacemen 3’s “Losing Touch With My Mind”. Spring 2003, Astral launched a southwest mini-tour playing dates in LA and Las Vegas. Astral's largest performance was for the annual Multi-Cultural Festival (may 2002) at UC Santa Cruz, performing for an audience of about 1000+ and has performed at other indie music festivals such as San Francisco’s Mission Creek Music Festival (2003) and PiNoise Pop 7 (2002). Astral has supported some more established bands and musicians such as David J (of Love and Rockets/ Bauhaus), Inner (featuring Jennifer Turner of Natalie Merchant's band), and Mr. North (produced by Jerry Harrisson of the Talking Heads/ Modern Lovers), as well as headlined their own shows at San Francisco’s Cafe Du Nord, Big Heart City, 330 Ritch, Hemlock Tavern, and Edinburgh Castle among many others.
